This collection documents the history of the Gary Health Department from 1970 to 1972. The records belonged to Dr. Herschel Bornstein, Gary Health Commissioner during the period. Much of the correspondence, minutes, and other files focus upon attempts to control air pollution produced by U.S. Steel's Gary Works, particularly coke oven discharges. Other issues include the Gary city dump controversy and a venereal disease control program for the city. A series of printed material offers information on air and water pollution and health activities in Gary and Lake County.
